Project Descriptions
 
Listed below is a brief summary of the projects funded by the Educational Foundation in 2010-2011.  For more information, please click on the grant award categories on our website:  Major Projects, PIE Grants, and Helping Hands Grants.
 
 

Early Learning Center Playground

 

A playground sized for pre-school children and children with special needs at the new Early Learning Center. The initial donation was made by the Foundation during the 2009-10 fiscal year. The project was completely funded the following year, 2010-11, thanks to the generous donation of Richard Stephenson.

 
 
Elementary Schools Leveled Literacy Libraries
 
A collection of books rated for specific levels of reading skill. Development of Leveled Literacy Libraries at each of the Elementary schools enhances small group reading instruction and student access to appropriate literature by allowing teachers across all elementary grade levels to share sets of books that have been rated for a broad range of reading skill levels. The books are available in multiple subject areas: fiction, science, poetry, etc. This unique type of library complements the school district’s reading curriculum.
 
 

Barrington Middle School Interactive Document Cameras

 

Interactive cameras, together with existing classroom Smart Boards, can visually and actively engage students in a large group setting. The interactive camera can project and record any image for all to see clearly. For example, teachers can focus the interactive camera on any document, such as a page of literature, and visually demonstrate how to actively notate the text. The teacher’s notations are projected onto the Smart Board in real time so that all students may easily view the work.

 
 
Second Step Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum
 
 
 The purchase of this curriculum for all levels up to and including 5th grade enables Barrington 220 to offer a comprehensive and age-appropriate Social and Emotional Learning program for our children. Social and Emotional Learning stresses the importance of individual behaviors that will lead to personal resiliency and academic success. The “Second Step” curriculum is an approach that has been proven to contribute to students’ academic success. (Source: Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning 2008).
 
PIE Grants
 

Projects for Innovation and Enhancement Grants provide the opportunity to develop and implement projects that teachers and staff believe will benefit students.  The grants are awarded each spring, up to $1,500, to ambitious teachers who submit proposals for innovative projects.

 

 
Helping Hands Grants
 

Helping Hands Grants award up to $500 per award (one time only) to provide teachers and staff with practical supplies and delivery of instructional projects when no other funding source is available. 

 
 

Community Speaker

 

An annual event open to all community members, which features an author/speaker who addresses issues relevant to the parents of Barrington 220.  This program is brought to the community in partnership with the PTO Presidents’ Council. The 2011 event featured Wendy Mogel, Ph.D., an internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist, parenting expert and the author of the bestselling parenting books, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and The Blessing of a B Minus. 

 

 

Elementary School Hands-on Science

 

Students conduct these science events in Barrington’s own prairie and marshlands in collaboration with Barrington’s Citizens for Conservation and Vehe Farm.  This program is in its second consecutive year.  4thgrade students learn about habitats, life cycles, and ecosystems as they collect seeds and data, and 2nd grade students learn about the life cycles of insects in their natural habitats.

Jenni Luby Grant

Family and friends established this ten year grant in 2006, in memory of longtime district employee Jenni Luby.  It was funded with a restricted donation designed to help staff develop and expand their teaching skills.

 

Robin Waterman Fund
